i like the post and wish id be in that class. it would be heaven for me.

i think you kind of have to be careful, games are defined by mechanics too, and as much as I love narratives they are just part of the puzzle. Like Geometry Wars is a great twin stick shooter, but by adding a pacifist achievement said interesting things about games. Walking sims actually can be lessened by poor mechanics: Still Wakes the Deep should have been as famous as the other Chinese Room games but the traversal was annoying and confusing.

This feels dead on: "I’ll go with this: Most negative reviews for games have to deal with unmet expectations rather than the game’s quality."

Case in point, Book of Hours. Reddit discussion ping-pongs between people saying they don't get what the fuss is all about, or they just straight up don't like it, and fans responding that it's an objectively good game on its own terms; those terms are just not for them.
